WELCOME…..
Greetings
in the name of our Lord Jesus.
This
has been an exciting first year for me as Immanuel’s “New Principal”! You can be proud of Immanuel Lutheran
School. The gift of your Christian
school is important to a Christ-centered worldview. Your teachers and staff are dedicated
Christians working diligently to ensure the success of each student
academically. Most importantly, students
are taught daily about God’s plan of salvation for their lives. We have the opportunity to impact their lives
today and to eternity. My year has been
a time of healthy transition. I have
taken time to experience Immanuel’s school culture. It is good for me to have an understanding of
where Immanuel is now and how we arrived at the programs and activities that
make Immanuel what it is today so that I can make appropriate leadership
decisions that will help the sustainability of Immanuel’s school ministry.
Technology
is an important tool in a child’s education.
This year at Immanuel we have started to make several technology
upgrades to our educational program.
iPads, through a generous donation, were purchased for our classroom
teachers. To the best of my ability I
have been providing professional development and encouragement to our teachers
demonstrating how to implement appropriate technology and curriculum within our
classrooms daily. Our Enhancement
Committee has taken on the challenge of implementing a portable iPad lab that
will allow our students to have the needed one-on-one technology that will
really enhance their learning.

The
Kindergarten classroom is a busy place to be!
This year we have gone from recognizing letters to sounding out words
and reading sentences. We have
progressed from counting to 10 to counting and writing numbers to 100 and
beyond. We have learned to write our
first and last names properly as well as how to write many words one sound at a
time. We love to learn! We also love to
play whether it is outside, in the gym, or at free choice time in the
classroom. The block center and
housekeeping center are favorite classroom activities. And we love God. Daily we listen to His word and hear of God’s
love for each of us. Our response? We praise God through our songs and prayers
and share His love with other people.

Last
fall the students in grades one and two took part in Ready, Set, Splash held at
the Plaza Pool. This activity, sponsored
by various community groups for all second grade students, occurred once a week
for five weeks. The children learned
about water safety in this hour-long class as well as played various games to
have fun and learn swimming skills. The
students also participated in a technology class taught by Mr. Hoch. Just recently, he directed a movie production
called “The Magic Box.” Students took
turns stepping into the box and dropped down to appear like there was a lot of
room. They were taught how this could be
edited to seem like they never got out of the box. Each student was given a DVD copy to keep.

study words and how they fit in the context of the lesson. We talked about gifts from God and I held up
the word “provide”. One of my first
grade students said, “provide, that word is in The Lamb.” She then proceeded to sing the first verse of
The Lamb. After a bit, most of
the other students joined in. The part
she was referring to is that God provides the Lamb of price. A wonderful
discussion followed this. Praise be to
God for our Lutheran School.
3rd and 4th Grades
Principal Anderson & Mrs. Barrie, Teachers
This
year our class has two classroom teachers each day, Principal Anderson and Mrs.
Barrie. Mr. Anderson teaches us
Religion, Reading, Science, and Physical Education and a few other things. Then he’s off to work at his principal duties
the rest of the day. He likes teaching
and uses his iPad some of the time while he teaches us. He is able to show us appropriate activities
that are fun and help us learn. Mrs.
Barrie teaches us the remainder of our classes.
She works hard each day for us teaching Math, English, Social Studies,
Michigan History, Spelling and Writing Workshop. This is Mrs. Barrie’s first year as a
fulltime teacher. She also teaches
preschool for our 4-year-old children when she is not teaching us. Mrs. Barrie and Mr. Anderson both love Jesus
and share their faith with us. We love
Jesus and know He loves us so much that He died to save us. Stop by and visit our classroom sometime.

In the fall, Immanuel 5th
and 6th graders attended a 5 week, 1 day a week enrichment program
called STARBASE Alpena at the CRTC. The
program is designed to provide dynamic, standards-based instruction that meets
5th and 6th grade science and math common core
standards. The curriculum included
activities in Physics, Chemistry, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering and
S.T.E.M. (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) career. Students participated in many hands-on
activities that were both enriching and enjoyable, especially using
state-of-the-art computers to make a 3D prototype. They were treated to tours of the facility
and a guest speaker. This program,
funded by a grant from W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is offered to over 60,000 students
annually. It is hosted by National
Guard, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Air Force Reserves and Army. We praise God for this unique experience.

and 7th Grades

News from the junior high! This was the year to study geography and in
so doing we had the opportunity to have some guest speakers. Our first guest speaker was our own dear
principal Mr. Anderson. He told us about
Papua New Guinea where he and Mrs. Anderson lived for four years and did
mission work along with teaching school.
He showed us many slides and told us many fun and interesting stories.
Next was Andrew Solomon who comes
from Australia. Two years ago he had
been a foreign exchange student at Alpena High.
He was back for a visit over Christmas and was staying with members of
church. His visit was really fun and the
best part was listening to him try to speak English without an Australian
accent.
Our last visit was with Dr.
Bansheera from India. Snow days
prevented her coming in January and February, so she finally came in April and
brought us yummy food to eat, some cute clothes for the girls to wear and lots
of interesting information.
We will be graduating 11 fine
students from Immanuel this year. They
are looking forward to their Mackinac Island trip, 8th grade banquet
and graduation on Sunday, June 9th.
