Religion instruction is based on the inerrant Word of God, the Bible, and centered in Christ so all students have the opportunity to grow in faith and life with God. The course includes the following: Old and New Testaments Bible Stories Life of Martin Luther Lessons on stewardship Daily prayer and worship Memory program of *~Bible Verses *~Hymns and prayers *~Portions of the Catechism Music All students will use their voices to praise God in singing for Church and Chapel. Second graders will explore music by: listening and singing instrumental and movement activities They will also develop their rhythmic experiences by learning and performing the following rhythms: half and whole notes eighth and sixteenth notes rests Language Arts Reading: The students are taught to become more fluent readers and expand comprehension through the teaching of: context clues making inferences seeing patterns in word families The Children are exposed to various styles of fiction and informative literature. Spelling: Spelling words selected are integrated with each week's reading focus. activities reinforce spelling patterns to promote reading and writing of other words students learn and use prefixes, suffixes and root words to spell new words practice using words in context Writing Workshop: Students are taught specific skills in writing and revising these genre: personal narratives essays (how to and all about books) poetry fiction Handwriting: Children practice D'Nealian techniques. Students are encouraged to develop neatness and correct letter formation in Science We promote the development of the processes that are integral to science: observing communicating classifying measuring comparing predicting Units studied include: interactions of living things energy and motion changes over time solids, liquids and gases what makes me sick Social Studies Units explored focus on cultural universals - basic human needs and social experiences found in all societies, past and present: food clothing shelter families communication transportation government economics/money childhood Math Math instruction is based on Saxon Math. With the use of manipulatives students learn problem solving and application to real life situations. Concepts taught include: extensive review of addition and subtraction facts through 20 addition and subtraction of two digit numbers place value to 100 time (to 5 minute increments) money (including all coins & dollar bills) 2-D and 3-D geometric figures beginning fractions measurements in English & Metric systems introduction to multiplication and division concepts Art Students receive weekly art instruction using a variety of medium. Experiences in the fine arts are occasionally integrated into core subjects. Physical Education Skills development with teamwork, fair play and a walking program are components of the Second Grade P.E. curriculum. Movements learned and reinforced include: skipping galloping running leaping hopping throwing catching kicking Technology As part of technology instruction, students in grade 2 (depending upon class alignment) will include: use classroom computers to supplement instruction learn and practice keyboarding skills on portable keyboards learn basic word processing skills by writing on keyboards use handheld devices to practice classroom skills |
